Hong Kong and Macau

Hong Kong

Hong Kong was an awesome city to visit with a little bit of Eastern and Western influences. It felt more like a European city, with outside cafe’s, every type of food you can imagine and beautiful landscape.

Our first day we went to the top of Victoria Peak where all the rich people live to get a view of the harbor and city, but of course it was so foggy we couldn’t see much. Instead our tour guide took us to a spot below the fog where we could still get a good view for pictures.

Then after that we went to a local market called Stanley Market on the water where we bought a lot of souvenirs for real cheap and Deanna was able to get some cheap name brand purses!

We then made our way over to Aberdeen Fishing Village which is settled on the water. Old boats look like they are taken straight from history books against the skyscrapers, which shows the contrast of old and modern. Also on this tour, we floated by the largest floating restaurant. Decorated in many colors and gold, it was so pretty, but we heard the food isn’t that great!

The next day we went on a tour outside of Hong Kong city (through the country). Our first stop was the Yuen Yuen Intstitute built on a hill with many colors making up the buildings. Then we headed out to a place where there was a huge garden called “heaven” and then right across from it houses where people lived so close together called “hell”. We continued to drive through the country stopping to look at things and finally ending back in Hong Kong city.

The skyline is amazing, especially at night and is separated by the harbor. At 8pm every night they do a laser light display on the buildings with music that goes along with it.

Macau

The next day we departed for Macau by ferry. It is being compared to Las Vegas, with large casinos. The Chinese are more into gambling big bucks than the entertainment aspect of Vegas, so there were no shows. Instead we casino hopped from Hard Rock (our hotel) to the MGM. Things were so spread out, unlike the Vegas strip, which they are in the process of trying to recreate.

But first we took a tour of Macau and stopped at some of the sites shown below.

Then we spent a lot of time in the Venetian taking a gondola ride and then attending an ice sculpture gallery. And we gambled a little, only the games we knew how to play and that were in English!

Considering it was hot, humid and Deanna had a cast on, it was a memorable experience outside of Japan and we hope to go to Hong Kong again someday. We will skip Macau next time!
