St Patrick’s Day Parade in Tokyo

Our first trip in Japan was this weekend. We decided to take a bus with the post’s outdoor recreation facility, which drives us to Tokyo and drops us at the area for the parade. The name of the area was Harajuku, which you may have heard from a Gwen Stefani song where she talks about Harajuku girls (which are very fashionable Japanese girls that shop in this district).

Anyway, so once arriving we decided to go to a shrine that was near our parking area. The shrine was called Meiji Jingu Shrine. Once we looked at the shrine we went to the shopping area and stopped at H&M and some other well known American stores. We then searched for a place to eat and the only place that didn’t have a wait was TGI Fridays (go figure!), so we had a tasty lunch, went looking for souvenirs, and then took a spot for the parade to begin!

There were many Irish pubs involved in the parade, various bands and Irish clubs of Tokyo, along with Irish dancers, Irish setter dog clubs, and the Camp Zama Army band!

It was a nice parade, smaller than Dublin’s, but just the right amount of time and entertainment!

After the parade we went to a cafe to have a cappuccino and beer before getting on the bus for our trek back to post! At the end of the day it was a good first experience in Tokyo and can’t wait to see what else we can discover!
